The Two Walls
Lina Luedi, Gr
long time ago, there lived a boy called Peter. He lived in East Berlin, when the wall between the East
and the West was still up. Now Peter had a mother from China who told him all the stories of the
Great Wall. Peter had been obsessed with those stories and claimed that one day he will get over the
wall in Berlin and see the Great Wall of China. He told all his friends about the journey that he could
go on if the wall had not been put up, but his friends just laughed at him and said,

You’re crazy, there are hundreds of guards there, and you could end up being shot!”
Now that was actually true, there were a lot of guards out there and Peters has seen a lot of deaths of people
that were trying to get out. Some people lived, but were caught and sent to prison for a long time.
One night, while Peter was sleeping, he had the strangest dream. He dreamed he was invisible and went
through the wall security system without being noticed and was on the West side and flew all the way to the
Great Wall, but when he woke up, he was in bed at home.
Next day on the news, there was a terrible report; a boy called Noah had just been shot while trying to throw
a rock at the wall to break it. Noah was Peter’s best friend and he rushed to the wall. There was no sign of Noah
anywhere until Peter picked up a huge rock that Noah was under. Noah’s parents carried him to the hospital like
lightning; the doctor listened to his heart and checked his body. There was a moment of silence, and the doctor
sadly said,
I’m really sorry, but he’s dead.’
Every single person in the whole room was crying like mad, Peter had cried so loud that the building felt
like it was going to collapse. Peter went home and felt miserable; the only thing that could cheer him up was rest.
More days and more days past since Noah had died, and his funeral had finally come. Peter didn’t have any
black clothes to wear so he painted them black; it’s a tradition that everyone wears black at the funeral. The
funeral was held at the church where Noah was born. The priest prayed to god, we sang to god and we all put a
present for Noah. Then, some people nailed his coffin together and slowly loaded it onto a carriage, the carriage
was taken to a graveyard and the coffin was placed in. The people slowly used shovels to put dirt in the hole so
it was covered and Noah was in peace. Peter was more determined than ever to get across the wall.
A few years after the death, Peter had to do a project at school on a country, and of course Peter chose
China. Peter didn’t choose it because he liked it he chose it because he wanted to write about the Great Wall and
his mother could help him. He did a poster on the Great Wall and in two weeks he was done. The poster looked
really good and even the pictures he put on were really pretty. Peter got an A+ and sang with joy when he went
home to show his mother. His mother gave him a great big hug and a kiss.
Now Peter started having dreams again, but this time they were telling him that he should face his fears and
get on with life, get over the wall and start a new life with no wall to keep him from travelling to other places so
he could be free. While the dreams were going, there were other things going through his mind too. He was
wondering how he was actually supposed to get over the wall, an air plane, an air balloon or?
Suddenly a plan filled his head; he could focus only on it and he had to follow his dreams and make it over
the wall. In his mind, he saw a giant catapult, and since he lived right next to a junk yard, he could get all the
supplies he needed. His mother knew how to build Chinese war machines that launches things into the air. They
built it with wood and scrap metal and worked on it day and night.
The day finally has arrived when the war machine was completed; Peter was very nervous, but excited at
the same time that he would be trying it first. It was a sacrifice that he was going to make to show that he had
done all he could to get this far into getting over the wall. He strapped some pillows around himself to give him
protection and said some words,
If I will die after this launch, my body will probably be on the other side!”
He strapped on and pulled the lever, WHOOSH! He flew up and up and up but landed with the wall in front
of him. He stood up in disappointment that it didn’t work. He stood there crying for a long time before a
newspaper flew into his face with the headline saying
Wall To Be Broken.
He looked up and could see people dancing on it; they even destroyed some of it bit by bit with a hammer.
Peter put his foot through a hole in the wall, and nobody shot him.
He raced home to tell everyone about the wall and all of his friends ran across to the West side like it was
their new home, to Peter, it was a new beginning. Peter’s mother bought tickets to Beijing, the start of the Great
Wall, and she said there was a village close by that they could live in. Like Peter said, it was a new beginning.
