The New Tale of the Great Wall
Yeong Cheuk Lam, Group 2: Fiction, Meng Tak Catholic School
t’s the Great Wall in China. I started the long journey to the Great Wall with Lucky. There weren’t any
people. We looked like nomads who moved from one province to another and from one city to another.
Finally, we came to the Great Wall. Although I was full of passion, I was so exhausted. We had to take a
rest. I couldn’t afford anymore. I was too tired. Lucky was very frightened and it barked loudly. Everything
faded out, and then I seemed to fall into a deep abyss.
Unconsciously, I found myself sleeping on the straw mat. “Where am I? What time is it now?” I
didn’t know. With the fresh and sweet smell of the dew, I heard the pleasant singing of the birds. “Are they
greeting me warmly?” I woke up and an old woman walking towards me.
I
Attracted by Lucky’s bark, she saw me on the floor. She kindly brought me to her home. She cured my
wound, helped me to change clothes and wash my face. She took care of me until I woke up now. I fainted three
days ago.
I thanked her for her help and kindness. When she knew about our trip, she was shocked that I walked to
the Great Wall myself and I was blind. She didn’t believe that I had such a decision.
The old woman’s family lived in the big town. They needed to work for their life, so there was only her in
her home. She ran a little store and sold the souvenirs of the Great Wall. She had a passion on the Great Wall
just like me. When she was young, she fell in love with the Great Wall. “Great Wall witnesses my love. How
wonderful it is!” After her husband died, she opened this little store so that she could earn her living. Meanwhile,
she wanted to keep her memories about her husband, and the love forever. How touching it is!
I rested in the woman’s house for a few days. She introduced something about the Great Wall to me. I learnt
more about that. Sometimes, she talked about my trip to the customers. I enjoyed the days when I stayed at the
old woman’s home. However, I needed to go on with my trip. I hugged the old woman to say goodbye and
thanked for the food and clothes she prepared for us. Besides, I thanked for taking care of Lucky. Although my
world was dark, the old woman made my life colourful. It seemed that I could see the beauty of my world.
“
Hey, are you the girl with a dog visiting the Great Wall on your own even though you are blind?” Although
I couldn’t see her face, I replied to her nicely. “Yes, I am.” She kept on talking on my side. “It is not realistic!
You can’t complete it because you are blind.” It was very annoying to me. However, I didn’t give up. On the
contrary, it gave me support. She didn’t know the meaning of my trip. Some of them objected but some of them
supported me. Some of them gave us some food and clothes. Some of them gave me a place to sleep. There
were different people asking me questions along the way. The news also reported our trip and gave support to us.
At first, I rejected their help because I didn’t like to show off myself. This was not the true meaning of my idea
at first. However, I was touched by their sincerity. I founded a funding organization with them called “Taking
care of blind people” to represent the trip of me and Lucky. Of course it could also raise the awareness to take
care of blind people among the public. It’s meaningful to let them feel the love in the world.
The people led us to visit different parts of the Great Wall. I fell down sometimes but we didn’t give up and
continued our trip.
We spent 8 years. We finished the whole trip. I put the flag that my grandpa gave me on the Great wall. And
I felt so excited and I cried out of happiness.
“
Taking care of blind people” got a lot of money because of the trip that I had this time. I hope this
organization could run forever fulfilling its vision.
