ne bright summer day, Alison and her friends, Ivy and Olivia, who were sisters, were at
thei
Chi
and
r favourite Chinese restaurant eating lunch and chatting about their upcoming trip to Beijing,
na.
After their meal, their waiter brought them some fortune cookies. They cracked open the cookies
curiously read the fortune messages inside.
“
Mine says ‘Good luck is coming your way.’ How nice!” said Olivia.
O
“
Oh my goodness!” shouted Ivy. “Mine says ‘You will visit a distant land’. It knows I am going to
Beijing!”
“
What about yours, Alison?” asked Ivy.
Alison gasped, “It says ‘Adventure awaits you”.
The three girls looked at each other in amazement, wondering if the fortune messages would come true.

The day came for them to leave for Beijing and the girls gathered at Alison’s home. But there had been a
hurricane and the girls were worried their trip would be delayed.
Olivia hated it, so she shouted “Hurricane, stop!” The moment she finished, the wind and rain began to slow
down and sunlight came through the clouds.
“
Wow, sis, I guess that was your ‘good luck’.” grinned Ivy.
They hurried to the airport but slow traffic delayed them. When they arrived, their flight had already left.
Just when they were at a loss, an announcement came: “We have three remaining seats on our next flight to
Beijing, any passengers ready to take them?” The three girls jumped up excitedly and yelled “We are!!!
As they boarded the plane, Alison said to Olivia, “You are very lucky, like the fortune cookies said.”

After a long flight, they arrived at Beijing. “Now that we have been lucky and are in a distant land, our two
fortune messages have come true,” Ivy said. “When will yours come true, Ali?”
Both Ivy and Olivia looked at Alison mischievously.
Alison was reading the local newspapers. “Hey look, it says here the Great Wall is being damaged and
stones have mysteriously disappeared. The police believe that someone is stealing them! Let’s go check it out!”
“
This could be our adventure!” Ivy whispered to Olivia as they left the hotel.

As they arrived at the Great Wall, many people were there. It was hot and sunny, but suddenly, the sky
turned pitch black. The three girls panicked. They heard sound coming from inside the Great Wall. And from an
opening a group of people was marching out in procession. As they came out more the three girls could see
clearly they were the terracotta soldiers! All of them were wearing armour and holding spears or bows. The girls
dashed behind a bush.
“
I’m scared.” whispered Olivia. “We all are!” Ivy whispered back.
The terracotta soldiers seemed to be in a meeting. The girls sneaked up closer. One soldier said, “Our
enemies are here! We must protect the Great Wall!”
Olivia was very confused, she did not see any suspicious people. She was not scared now, so she ran out to
the terracotta soldiers and said, “Hey! Who are your enemies? Tell us, we can help!”
“
Ahhhh! Enemies! They were spying on us!”, the terracotta soldiers cried in alarm. “What? We are good
people!”, Olivia said.
“
Why did you break the Great Wall then?”, a terracotta soldier asked.
The three girls realized they were talking about the people who stole the Great Wall stones. Alison and Ivy
came out too. Alison said, “We will not break a historical monument, never ever!” The terracotta soldier paused
and another one said, “No! We can’t trust them!”
Then all of sudden, all the soldiers disappeared. “What just happened?” the girls wondered. “Did we talk to
terracotta soldiers from the past?”

The next morning they thought of some ideas. Olivia said, “Maybe if we can fix the broken parts of the
Great Wall, the terracotta soldiers will believe we are good people!”
