One day, three little children were playing by the high cliffs of Huang Shan. One of the children
playing so excitedly that he didn’t notice he was getting closer and closer to the edge of the cliff.
flash, the little boy fell down.
He grabbed hold of a rock with one hand, and tried to climb back up. His sister and brother tried to reach
him, but couldn’t. The boy’s sister was so determined to save him that she slipped of the cliff herself. The
children cried for help as loud as they could, but no one heard them.
Fortunately, the dragon was flying around the cliffs and heard them. He swooped down and carried the three
children back to the village. The dragon was awarded with flowers and a medal presented from the head of the
village.
Autumn quickly led to winter. China was covered in thick blankets of snow. In a small hut at the edge of a
village, lived an old lady.
The old lady had no friends or family, and was far too old at the age of ninety to chop wood herself and
make a fire.
The old lady shivered as the temperature dropped below zero degrees. She was quivering and shaking, and
became blue all over. The dragon spotted the old lady through the tiny chimney, and decided to give her a
surprise.
He took pieces of wood from the local woodchopper, and dropped them down the chimney. THUD! The
wood dropped on the fireplace.
The dragon did his best imitation of the Big Bad Wolf, took a deep breath, and blew into the chimney.
BOOM!
There was a blazing fire in the fireplace.
As soon as the thermometer resumed a warmer temperature, the old lady crept carefully out of the bedroom.
She peeked cautiously into the living room. She gasped, seeing the warm fire. Abandoning her patched quilt,
the old lady warmed herself. When the dragon saw the old lady’s smile, he felt a sense of happiness he had
never felt before.
As the dragon was flying, he spotted a poor family of four, freezing in an old garden shed they used for a
house. They were so poor that they had nothing to eat, and the shed was flimsy and leaking.
The dragon became so overwhelmed with sadness, that, without thinking, he bought a pile of bricks and
searched for the perfect place to start a house. Finally, on a patch of empty green grass, he set down the first
brick of the house.
After a day of hard labor, the dragon finished. The huge brick house stood in front of him as he placed the
final brick on the chimney. The dragon stepped back to admire his work, and flew back to the little shed.
The dragon gently lifted the children and parents out of the shed and carried them, still asleep, into the
house. After the dragon left, the little boy woke up to find himself in a dream.
He touched the soft bed he was sleeping on, jumped up and exclaimed, “This is awesome! Why are we
here?” The two children shrieked happily and woke up their parents. The family then had the most satisfying
meal they’d ever had.
Afterwards, the father asked, “Who is behind all of this?”
The mother said, “We must thank him/her for doing this if we ever have a chance.”
Seeing their happy faces made the dragon feel special, and very contented.
The dragon felt the ground shaking as he was taking a rest. He flew into the sky, trying to find out the
source of the shaking.
He realized there was a mini earthquake. The villagers didn’t mind, and carried on with what they were
doing. Suddenly, a rumbling sound came.
The dragon’s eyes widened as he saw a huge amount of water rushing towards the village. The villagers ran
from the village, screaming and shouting.
Without hesitation, the dragon flew down and blocked the flood with his big red body. The water splashed
hard against the dragon, and he was weakening quickly.
At last, the rhythm of the flowing water stopped, and the dam was empty. The villagers cheered and hugged
one another.
The dragon looked unwell, and was not smiling. He was extremely exhausted.
