This lesson:

• Reintroduces mode of transpor t vocabulary and develops it into a story format

• Gives children the tools with which to create and develop stories of their own

This Reader introduces a story format and encourages children to formulate a narrative, as opposed to creating separate, stand-alone sentences. In the Reader, Max’s intention is introduced (he is going to London to visit his family), and the rest of the story focuses on how he makes that journey (that is, the various modes of transpor t that he takes). The Reader also reintroduces the concept of mood by talking about the fact that Max is tired and that he doesn’t want to go back to Beijing.

Learning objectives:

• To construct a coherent story

• To talk about taking different modes of transpor t • To apply previous knowledge of constructing separate sentences to storytelling (constructing multiple sentences that are inter-related)

Learning outcomes:

After this lesson, children should be able to:

• Use the knowledge they have acquired throughout the Readers series to create stories

• Talk about different modes of transpor t and apply the knowledge to real-life situations

Assessment:

• I can write a story of at least 4 sentences

• I can apply the Mandarin I have learned to talk about a real-life situation in detail

Differentiation:

This is the frst Reader to encourage children to construct a story using sentences that follow each other sequentially. Ask children to construct multiple-sentence stories. Advanced children can do this, using vocabulary from other themes they have studied so far. To help children to order vocabulary into themes, they should be encouraged to create their own dictionary; by writing down vocabulary for par ticular themes they can then use this dictionary to construct their stories.

Related Readers:

Dragon Goes On A Trip (Orange Book 17) was the frst Reader to introduce modes of transpor t.

Going On A Trip (Brown Book 15) and Going By Train (Red Book 21) both cover the theme of transpor t with much more complex language.
