Hours past till a soft knocking on the door came. I dried my tears and walked over and opened the
door. My grandfather stood there, he was carrying a leather backpack over his shoulder and in his hand a small
shaft tied to a long string of leather. “Don’t say anything.” He whispered.
I opened the door a little wider and let him through. He sat on my bed and started unpacking the bag,
inside was; two loafs of bread, a flask already filled with water, spices, medicine, a blanket and some other
things to eat. He told me to wear the warmest things I had and then to meet him outside on the lawn. With out
another word he disappeared. I slowly got changed, and then I left the room to meet my grandfather. “Here” he
said, “take the bag and my knife and go north. You will find the dragon easily. Don’t worry.” He handed me
the things.
I love you.” Were the only words I could manage to say.
I do too.” He kissed me on my forehead. “Now go.”
And I went, I ran as fast as I could. Running over hills up and down. Always heading north.
Days I travelled, the thin streak of smoke being my leader. As I came closer the sky turned from blue
to vermillion. The sky was in flames and the city that had once lay below me had been burned down leaving
only soot and ash. I held a handkerchief before my mouth and continued walking.
I had been travelling for so many days and now I was completely dead, I was exhausted and I had no
energy. The first loaf of bread was already gone and the second was slowly decreasing its size. I kept telling
myself that I will find the dragon sooner or later and that I will survive.
Another day past and I had slowly made my way through the remains of the city.
Dirty faces looked from burnt windows, the foundations of the buildings were broken down and
corpses lay scattered everywhere.
Tears shot in my eyes but I pressed them away. I didn’t want to be a wimp. I had to finish this.
Another day past, I was so tired. Tripping over my own toes, stumbling over rocks and pebbles. Until I
was so tired that I just fell. But the thing I fell against was not a rock or a burnt building; the thing was rough
and scaly. It shimmered in the sunlight. I yelped, edged backwards, fell and just lay there helpless. I turned and
stared into two great big sapphire blue eyes, and screamed.
I woke up because two whiskers were brushing by cheeks.
You are a human?” A deep bass voice asked me. I nodded.
And you want to kill me?” I nodded again. But before the dragon could say anything else I jumped up
gathered up all my strength, pulled the knife out of its shaft and slashed with all my might, slashing open gashes.
Blood gushed out of the wounds, and some of it stuck to me.
The dragon slowly shifted backwards, edging its way to the cliff. Sighing with every movement. I
frowned, but saw my chance. I proceeded to him, sprinting. The knife held ready in my hand. The dragon
didn’t do anything, he just stood there. I went faster and faster. Death closed his eyes. I shoved the knife into the
dragon’s scaly chest. Blood trickled out of the thin slash and he fell. Down, down he went falling to his own
death. I stepped to the edge looked down at the stiff body. His eyes were gone and all I could see were the two
black eye sockets gaping open at me.
I looked up in the sky and saw two stars shining bright. They were bigger than the other stars and
sparkled. I knew the dragon was now watching over me and in a way I was happy.
