with one of the remaining Government officials. “Maybe they’ll tell me what China wasn’t telling the public?”
Jamie was determined to find out.
As it just so happened, a formal event was happening at the House that night, and Jamie sprung at the
open invitation. Only, it was an invitation only event, and Jamie was barely anyone important on a scale from
one to Government official. So he did what any passionate and curious newsman could do; he snuck in.
The walk to the house only took fifteen minutes, and by that time everyone was arriving in their shiny
black cars wearing tuxedos and gowns. Jamie looked around, and whistled to himself; formal events were taken
quite seriously apparently.
You there, come take these coats to the closet. Hurry up.” A lady with brown eyes framed in glasses
snapped at Jamie, shoving into his hands a couple of brown fur jackets. It wasn’t the fact that the winter coats
were unimaginably heavy, but how he had gotten into the party without even trying.
The lady clicked her tongue, “well? I don’t pay you to just stand there and look bored. Quickly.” Jamie
was ushered through the doors and shoved around amongst all the fancy looking people. “Uh, excuse me, do
you know where the coat closet is?” Sheepishly asking a girl who looked like she was working there as well,
Jamie was pointed in the direction of a big maple brown door.
Thanks.” After hanging up the jackets, he carried a silver tray that was given to him and walked
around serving crab puffs. He looked around and noticed that all the guests were avoiding a certain corridor in
the back of the ball room, and decided to check it out. Weaving in and out between all the guests, he found that
there weren’t even any guards.
There was a door at the end of the corridor and a sign outside that said ‘MEETING IN PROGRESS’.
Curiosity got the better of him and Jamie crept a bit closer to see if he could hear anything. Murmurs turned into
quiet voices and he could almost make out a couple sentences.
Press have been wandering around the barrier lately...” “...should we let the public know?” “How
would this... however, we have to think of the risks...”
A couple more seconds and he would have heard the last part of “you know why we took down the
wall, General. If everyone knew that the...” if only one of the guests hadn’t drunkenly walked towards Jamie.
The lady wearing a white gown stretched out her arm and grabbed Jamie by the shoulder, dragging him away
from the door and towards the crowded hall.
How about a dance, hm? You look handsome enough to be a model, Mister...” Jamie gently pulled his
arm away, “I’m sorry Miss, but I'm supposed to be working. If you would excuse me...” The lady grabs onto
Jamie’s arm again, but this time harder. Her eyes gleamed and she didn’t look drunk at all.
She pulled him close and breathed into his ear, the smell of champagne tingling his skin. “I know who
you are and what you’re doing here, and that certainly is not being a waiter. People were just about to walk your
way, so you should be thanking me.” She saw another waiter walk past with a tray of champagne flutes and
delicately picked one up.
You want to know why the wall was down. You’re a reporter for the SNN4 news telecast, I recognize
your cute face.” Jamie gulped, running his hand through his hair like he did when he was frustrated. He stuttered
a quick thank you, and the lady just smiled. “We’re actually working on the same side then, per se.”
Jamie looked at the lady again, drawn in by her honest looking eyes and attractive face. He questions,
so what exactly do you do then, Miss...” “Sierra. And I’m part of the resistance. We’re the people who try and
fix what China’s destroyed, and the landmark is one of them.”
Resistance? Doesn’t that mean... “yes, it means there is a war to come. China’s one of the worlds
biggest exporters, and in a couple months it’s going to be the only country with enough money to sustain it's
people.” Jamie furrowed his eyebrows, “in simpler terms, China’s going to take over the world.”
The lady shifted her eyes from left to right, observing the people who were starting to take an interest
in Jamie and Sierra’s conversation. She laughed loudly and pulled Jamie outside, towards the black car that was
waiting in front of the gate.
Let’s take this conversation to somewhere else, where are you staying?” Jamie told her the name of
the hotel, and they sat in the hotel bar for a couple hours talking. “The world being taken over by China... is that
supposed to be a bad thing?” Asked Jamie, who tapped his fingers against the wooden counter.
Sierra took a sip of her water before continuing to explain, “China’s going to take over the world and
when that happens, the Government will be so overcome with power and wealth; they’ll forget about the
citizens.” Looking at Jamie, Sierra sighed and pulled a strand of hair behind the ear.
They’re planning on starting war with everyone, and once that happens only the people who can
afford it will be able to survive in China. They’re planning on using their technology to sink the continents and
have China be the only country.” Jamie almost gagged on his coffee and put it down on the coaster, “you mean
the field is to keep China the only part of the world that doesn’t get destroyed?”
