years ago in Ancient China, a man named Chang lived with his lovely family. They lived under Qin
Shi Huang’s ruling. Qin Shi Huang was the emperor and a very greedy, selfish man. He had a home
made completely out of gold which had been mined by thousands of servants.
Chang worked for Qin Shi Huang as his lead construction worker. He had built over 50 structures
for Qin Shi Huang. He himself had built Qin Shi Huang’s palace once all the gold was prepared. Qin Shi
Huang was never happy with what he had though. The villagers did NOT like Qin Shi Huang. He worked them
too hard, with no reward, and a very low wage.
One fine day, Chang was in the dining room eating lunch with his fellow workers when suddenly over
the loud speaker, Chang was summoned by Qin Shi Huang. The crowd of servants held their breath in horror as
Chang stumbled out of the room. They were sure Chang wasn’t going to be coming back.
Chang walked down the long red carpet towards the emperors throne. He went in to find Qin Shi Huang
sweating with fear. Their greatest enemies would soon be attacking and they needed more protection. Chang got
down on his knees and bowed before asking what he was to do. Qin Shi Huang spoke desperately to Chang. He
looked around him before saying: “Chang, Our greatest enemies will be attacking in a matter of days, I need you
to build a great wall to protect us. Quickly Chang, Make haste!”
Chang set off immediately to build the great wall of China. The emperor provided 3,873,999,999
individual bricks to build the great wall. Within days, Chang had built a wall 8851.8 km (5500 miles) long. As
he placed the last brick on, he noticed that he was one brick short. He dragged himself to the emperor with the
last of his strength. No sleep and no food. He had survived 18 straight days with only water. He approached the
emperor in ripped dirty rags which had started off as a clean cloak. He face was black with dirt and his hands
covered in cement. He had lost a lot of weight and as he reached the throne, he collapsed to the ground straight
away. In a dry, croaky voice he told the emperor what he needed. The emperor decided to make life extra hard
for Chang despite his current state.
Qin Shi Huang bent down so that his mouth was level with Chang’s ear. He whispered to Chang: “I will
not give you the brick that you need. I will send you on a journey though, deep into the earth to fetch me the
diamond blob. If you do this for me, I will give you the brick.”
Chang heard this and was immediately determined that he would do this for the emperor. He went home
and spoke to his oldest son-Qing Long. Chang knew that there was no way he could pass the security obstacles
which guarded the diamond blob. He would need help, which is which is why he went to his 17 year old son for
help.
Chang explained to Qing Long what would be involved if he did this. Qing Long was afraid, but he knew
that he had to help his father. His father had been working for days non-stop, he was getting older and weaker ;
he needed Qing Long’s help. So, Qing Long agreed to help his father.
Chang then set off to find his second son-An Lang. Chang had a sense that he and Qing Long could
bypass the security system which guarded the diamond, but he went to his second son just for backup. An Lang
was 14 years old. He was a frail, thin boy with long scruffy hair. He wasn’t muscular like his older brother and
he was almost as bony and thin as his baby sister. An Lang agreed instantly without thought. He thought of this
as a chance for him to overcome fears. An Lang was so scared he was screaming inside, but he wanted to do this
more than anything in the world.
So Chang had his two teenaged sons helping him to do this job. He was positive that was enough. His
baby daughter who was only but 10 months old liked to tag along wherever her older brothers went. Their 10
month old child was named Mi Mi. Mi Mi was a very smart child. Much smarter than her brothers when they
were her age. MUCH SMARTER. She had kind of sign signaled that she wanted to go as she couldn’t talk yet,
but her father rejected her request, but inside Mi Mi had a plan stored in her little brain.
The next morning Chang and his two sons woke up early. They snuck quietly into the kitchen and packed
a sack full of bread and water. This was going to be a long journey. All the while that they were in the kitchen,
Baby Mi Mi had managed to open her crib’s door and had climbed out. She crawled into her father’s back pack
and sat quiet and motionless at the bottom of his bag until the bag was picked up and swung onto Qing Long’s
back.
