An Incident at the Great Wall
Shriya P
t was a fine weather, the sun was shining brightly and the sky was as blue as violets. From a distance the Great
Wall looked like a snake going over the mountains. Below the Great Wall you could see the many deserts,
grasslands and mountains surrounding it. The beautiful weather drew a lot more crowd than usual. People were
everywhere, exclaiming at the magnificent view and trying to push through the crowd so that they could take a
picture of the view. Children were screaming and laughing and the adults were trying to keep them together.

Everyone was smiling or chatting except for one man. He was wearing a heavy, long army jacket,
black trousers and a heavy belt underneath his jacket. He was also wearing light brown army boots but because
they were so muddy you could hardly tell what color they were. He was observing the graffiti as if he wanted to
not draw attention to himself, but it was not working.
Anyone who passed the man would glare at him or try to avoid him. He looked like those people you
would see on TV. The ones you would never want to meet in your life. His eyebrows were arched down which
made him look like he was glaring all the time. He had green eyes, a very sharp nose, thin lips and a face that
always had a constant scowl.
The man had come for a mission. A mission he was determined to finish. Unlike most he hadn’t come
on his free will. He was hired to do it and he knew if he wasn’t successful he would not live to see the daylight.
There was one thing he hated, was that he was afraid. He hated being afraid because that meant he was
weak in character. The only reason he was chosen for the challenge was the fact that he was tougher and more
skillful than the others.
The man looked around him. Everyone was happy. They don’t know what they are expecting thought
the man. He noticed one boy in particular who was standing on the opposite side of the wall. The boy was no
older than ten but the way he carried himself he looked older. He was wearing a huge jacket; green trousers and
he had a huge wristwatch on his hand. As far as the man could see the boy was all alone. He reminded the man
of himself when he was younger, lonely, sad but still steadfast for his age.
The man started thinking of his childhood. How he was always teased for looking ugly. How his
parents abandoned him and his sister just because they were not good looking. He and his sister had to beg for
money, steal everything they could find. His sister used to always crack jokes whenever he used to feel sad.
