Back in Time to Construct the Great Wall

orget it! Just run!” shouted Mike through the battle cries of the fierce Mongolian Warriors.
Not too long ago, fighting for his homeland China seemed like a good idea… but now it
seemed as if it was a ticket heading straight for doom. How have I gotten myself into this? He
thought to himself, as he recalled what happened in what seemed like 10 hours ago…
His entire hand was covered in sweat just by gripping firmly on his cane. He panted a few
times, then struggled to climb the last few steps and finally, he reached the first checkpoint. Mike slumped onto
the nearest chair he could find, with Samuel slumping after him as he gasped for breath. Before summer, they
were destined to climb the whole Great Wall, so they decided that they would be the first students from their
school to do so. But at this rate, they probably wouldn’t be able to get there until Christmas.
As Samuel was busy slumbering all over the place, Mike noticed a glimmering object sitting in an
unnoticeable corner.
Dude, what’s that over there?” Mike asked, his voice full of curiosity.
How do I know…” as Samuel continued to doze off.
To satisfy his curiosity, Mike crept closer to see what the object exactly was. And when he finally saw
clear of what it was, he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Wow… I’ve never seen anything like it before…”
What do you mean you’ve never seen anything like…” and even Samuel was so shocked that he
couldn’t even complete his sentence.
Right in front of their very eyes, lying in an unnoticeable corner, was an ancient sword.
It has got markings on it… very ancient… must be like, 2 to 3 thousand years old!”
Yep, it sure does.” Samuel replied, “And if my understanding is correct, the marking on the sword
says: The sword of the brave.”
As Samuel was about to pick up the sword to examine it further, all of a sudden, it began to glow,
making them shield their eyes.
Where are we?” asked Mike as they were awoken by the sounds of clanging swords and screams of
people.
They found themselves wearing heavy and lumpy pieces of armor from head to toe, armed with a small
dagger and a bow, and of course, the Sword of the Brave. Around them, a war was going on. Mongolians were
fighting against the soldiers of China, trying to lead an invasion and right now, the Mongolians seemed to have
the advantage.
Why are we wearing these lumpy pieces of armor? And what happened to the checkpoint and the
Great Wall? They’ve disappeared!” exclaimed Mike with a bit of panic in his voice.
I… I think…” Samuel stammered, “I think we went back in time, right back to when it is still the Qin
Dynasty…”
So I suppose that these are our people, right?” gesturing towards the rather helpless Chinese, “And
those are our enemies?” pointing straight at the Mongolian warriors.
Since they don’t look like Chinese at all.”
Yes, you’re right, Mike,” Samuel said confidently, readying his bow, “We’re gonna go kick some
butt! Charge!”
The two teenagers caught the Mongolians by surprise, shooting them between the eyes and slashing
here and there. Mike even managed to head-butt one of the warriors, knocking him unconscious. The two
managed to get their sides’ hopes up, cheering themselves and fighting on. At last, they managed to push the
Mongolians back… for now.
We’ll need to prepare more forces to counter them,” said one of the Chinese soldiers, while in the
meeting after the battle.
However, at this rate, our forces will soon be used up sooner or later. Therefore, I’m asking if any of
you have any suggestions.”
Silence filled the room. It seemed to be impossible to rescue China at this state, thought Mike.
If only the Great Wall was still here…”
Wait! The GREAT WALL! That’s it!”
A few minutes later, after Mike and Samuel had explained everything about the Great Wall, everyone
had agreed to build it. However, there was one more question unsolved: How can they construct the wall
