A Journey to the Great Wall
Tovey Wong,
ong time ago in America, there was a boy called Vinson who was full of goals. He lost his mum when
he was born. One day, he read a travel magazine and he learnt about the Great Wall of China. Since
then, he was thinking about something every day. He was thinking about The Great Wall. What was it
in fact? How did it look like? After some time, he still couldn’t let go of The Great Wall. Therefore,
Vinson asked his dad curiously ‘Dad, what is The Great Wall?’ ‘The Great Wall is one of the seven
greatest wonders of the world. A lot of tourists travel to China because of its existence. It is a monstrous
construction. You will have to walk for several hours or days to have some idea of it,’ replied Dad. “But can I
go there for a journey as my fifteenth birthday present, Dad. Please! I beg you! Please!” Dad thought for a while.
He was touched by his son’s passion. Yet, he answered his son, ‘Sorry, My son! It is a pity that we don’t have
enough money to travel to China, You know, we are very poor and it costs a lot to go there.’ You would think
that Vinson was very disappointed but he wasn’t. Instead, his father’s answer inspired his fighting spirit! He
said ‘Dad, I will try my best. I will study harder and be a capable person. I will earn a lot of money too. I feel
my own determination!’ Afterward, he took out his book to study for his final exam. His dad was overjoyed to
see his son’s progress. The next term came and gone. Vinson was one of the best students in his class and he
was admitted to a famous college in America. He entered Harvard University because of his excellent grades in
the college. Vinson understood that he wasn’t very good at English vocabulary so he tried to use the dictionary
as often as he could. Sure enough, his hard work paid off. Several years later, Vinson graduated and went to an
international big wood factory. He was so smart that his boss was very keen on him. After a month, he was
promoted to the position of manager. He began to get richer and richer. Several years later, Both Vinson and his
father thought their dream was going to come true. They would be the first Americans who visited The Great
Wall!

Soon everything was ready. Vinson was a billionaire. He had more than enough money to travel to China or
any other place in the world! He opened his own shops. His shops were famous internationally. After that, he
didn’t forget his goal to the Great Wall! He bought a ship for himself and he named it ‘The Explorer’. He
started to prepare everything on the ship and he bought two horses and sailed to the Great Wall with his dad.
That was a very long journey. Vinson had to sail across the Pacific Ocean. Arriving in China at last, he and his
father rode their horses to The Great Wall. The villagers there were very kind. They gave Vinson and his dad a
home. They cooked very delicious food for them, too. They led them to The Great Wall. Although the road to
The Great Wall was very rugged, Vinson and his father were enjoying the journey. They thanked God because
God gave them a great chance to go to the Great Wall and they were looked after by the villagers. Finally, they
reached The Great Wall. Vinson said to the villager’s chief, ‘Thank you very much. This is some money for
you!’ ‘You’re welcome. This is our tradition to help people, so there is no need to return anything. We don’t
need this money!’ the chief replied without much thinking. Vinson thought: ‘Wow! This is a good virtue.’
‘
Look! The Great Wall is massive. It would take a long time to walk the whole Great Wall!’ said his son. ‘It
will be OK, my son. Nothing is impossible.’ ‘You’re right, Dad.’ Vinson replied. They took photos everywhere.
They played soldiers in the beacon. They had fun everywhere.
Vinson was very satisfied because he had achieved his goal. His dad was very proud of his son. Vinson
was successful in many ways. He improved the life for his family even though he grew up in a poor family. In
addition, he realized his biggest dream. Finally, they returned to America. They went to see President
Washington immediately. ‘President, we have something important to tell you,’ Vinson told the president. ‘Oh!
I remember you, Vinson! You own the largest ship in our country. What important thing would you like to tell
me?’ ‘President! I went to China last month. I have just come back and I want to tell you something
immediately,’ Vinson said. The president was astonished. No one has been to China, even himself! ‘Really? I
don’t think you have been there.’ ‘Of course I have.’ Vinson took out some pictures to the president. ‘It is China
and this is the Great Wall!’ President Washington said. ‘Here are some tips for you, president: Firstly, we
should be humble and learn, like the Chinese, who are so smart and diligent. Chinese built a long wall called the
Great Wall. This wall could help them to defend invaders. President, I think these things we need to learn!’ The
president thought that was a brilliant idea. Then president gave him generous rewards. The president was
touched by Vinson. He thanked Vinson a lot.
Readers, this story tell us about wisdom enough in life. We should have perseverance, don't give up too easily,
and let us always follow our heart. I think Vinson is a very courageous boy because he always tries his best to
finish everything he wants. Just like when he travels to The Great Wall, he had to experience a lot of storms but
he never gives up. He continues going to The Great Wall and finishes his journey. I think we should follow the
example of Vinson!
