New Tales of the Great Wall

eorge is a special Chinese boy. VERY special, indeed. His mother gave birth to him while she was
visiting the Great Wall. George grew up in Beijing, and owing to this, he could always visit his birth
place when he was free. Therefore, there was a very special connection between him and the Great
Wall. And his adventure happened in a stormy night.
A great storm struck Beijing. George had the most ridiculous dream ever! He was hanging out
with his friends, and they suddenly fell into a hole and traveled back in time… But this dream seemed so real,
thought George. All of a sudden, he was woken up by the thunder. He opened his eyes and found himself at the
Great Wall with his best friends. The sky was covered with clouds same as the ones in reality; the standing
guards on the forts dressed exactly the same as the soldiers he saw on historical documentaries. George knew
that it was not a dream, it was real!

The group started examining their surroundings curiously. At the same time, George’s fingertip touched the
Wall, he felt that he was full of power! A voice in his mind told him, “A group of people have decided to rewrite
history. They are going to destroy the Great Wall. Your mission is to prevent them from doing so. I have given
you magical power. Take your time. “Wait!” George protested, but it was too late. The voice was already gone.
He told his mates about the voice at once. One of them, Simon, asked, “That’s cool, but how are you going to
activate your magical power?” “Maybe you should try concentrating on thinking about the thing you want to do
really hard,” suggested another. “That might do the trick. Let’s try to find those people and work out how to stop
them,” answered George.
They found a group of about seven people, equipped with old-fashioned weapons, in a distance. At once,
George realized they wanted to blow up the Great Wall by using their dynamite. George shared his finding with
his companions, and they started thinking of a way to save the history. “Maybe you could use your magical
power to miniaturize yourself, get near the cannon and break it before they are ignited,” suggested one of his
mates. “Great idea! May I come with you?” asked George’s best friend, Dan, with whom he had an argument
with the day before.
Sure. But it’ll take such a long time for us to walk there. Let’s turn ourselves invisible and fly there,”
George started concentrating on turning themselves invisible. He concentrated really hard, and he heard a
sudden scream from Simon, “What on Earth are they doing? They have disappeared!” “No need to worry. (And
everybody was screaming in horror this time) We just turned invisible. We’ll be flying to the cannon to destroy
it,” answered Dan joyfully. “That’s a brilliant plan! Good luck!” said Simon. George began concentrating on
having the ability to fly, and the next instant, he felt that wings were growing on his back! He tried to control
them by his willpower, and he succeeded. “Hey! Dan, I can fly! Can you?” asked George delightfully. “Of
course I can!” Dan replied merrily. And the dream team continued making their way to the cannon.
As soon as they arrived, they discovered the fuse had already been lit; they had to take action at once! Dan
shouted, “Quick, George! Try to connect your mind with Simon’s and tell him to act quickly!” George did as
told. He ‘told’ Simon, “There’s no time to be terrified. They have already lit the fuse. Do something now!” and
the next moment, they heard Simon screaming again at the top of his lungs, “Fire! Fire! Help!” Everybody else
at the scene believed there was a fire and ran for their lives. George grabbed the opportunity and shot a stream
of water from his fingers to the fuse with his magic power, but it was too late. The fuse had already burnt to the
end. The cannonball was shot! George produced a shield immediately. But he knew the shield could not do
much. He had to find a way to stop an important part of Chinese history from being destroyed. Dan seemed to
be thinking of the same thing. He said, “You can blow up the cannonball?” George sent a bolt of fire but it
missed by an inch. He sent another one immediately and watched anxiously as the cannonball drew nearer to the
Wall. Fortunately, it hit the cannonball and there was an explosion.
George shot out some water to clear up the mess, and hugged his friend. He had so many feelings which
could not be described in words. As they flew back to meet their friends, George heard the voice inside his mind
again, “Well done! The mission is accomplished. You want to keep your power and continue on missions to
protect history and leave your friends; or continue your life as a normal kid but give up your magical power?”
He answered the latter without hesitation, as he had learnt that his friends were way too important to let go of.
Wise choice, kid. I’ll take you back to your dream in a moment. Treasure your friends, George.”
When George woke up the next morning, the first thing that came into his mind was the hilarious dream. He
picked up the phone and called Dan and told him, “Hey, Dan. It’s George. I just want to tell you that you’re
amazing. Without you, I couldn’t have saved the Great Wall. I’m really sorry for arguing with you over such a
tiny matter yesterday. Are we still best friends?” For an instant, Dan did not quite understand. Anyway, it didn’t
matter any more. “Of course, and we’ll always be!” George knew that Dan had forgiven him. For the first time
in his life, he knew their friendship would last forever.
