Ping said, “Long long ago, before you were born, your great great grandfather, Xiao Lung, was
of the Chinese army. The Mongolians attacked China and they invaded. Now let me tell you how
Xiao Lung managed to push them out of China and helped the Chinese people by building The Great Wall.

One day, when Xiao Lung was at home doing housework, a messenger came and told him that the
Mongolian army invaded China and people needed to join the army to fight the Mongolians. Xiao Lung agreed
that he would join the Chinese army to protect their country and attack the invaders.
The next day, Xiao Lung started his training, he had to run, practice shooting arrows and learn how to
protect himself when the enemy was attacking. Soon he was a leader in the Chinese army. One month later, they
were ready to fight against the Mongolians. They put on their gear, packed their arrow, bows, shields and
swords. Every person had to have a shield and arrows and a bow or a sword. They all rode on horses until they
got to where the Mongolians were camping. Like all the other soldiers, Xiao Lung ate a big meal and wished the
other people in the army good luck, and then they set off to attack the invaders.
They went silently through the dark forest to the camp of the Mongolians. But the bad news was that one of
the people guarding the camp heard them and saw them. And the person that saw them was going to wake up all
of the Mongolian army. However, Xiao Lung quickly used his arrow to shoot the man before he could raise the
alarm and wake the Mongolian army.
The other people in the Chinese army were glad that he used his bow and arrow to kill the Mongolian guard
just in time. They sneaked up on the Mongolian army to prepare for battle. Xiao Lung came up with the plan of
attack. The Chinese army surrounded the Mongolian army and began to shoot fire arrows at their enemy’s camp
to burn all the tents and kill as many soldiers as they could. The Mongolians panicked and most of them died.
The rest ran for their lives and left China. Everyone celebrated and was happy, and Xiao Lung was a hero and
became famous in the army.
Most of the Chinese thought that the Mongolians were defeated and would never return but Xiao Lung did
not believe this. He thought that the Mongolians would come back with an even bigger army. So, he went to the
Chinese Emperor and told him that they should find a way to stop the Mongolians from entering China ever
again. The Emperor though that it was a really good idea. He asked Xiao Lung to design a giant wall and to be
in charge of building it. Xiao Lung said that a wall would help but that he was afraid that it would take too many
workers and too many years to build such a great wall. The Emperor thought for a moment then said that, with
some special help, the Great Wall of China could and would be built. Xiao Lung asked the Emperor what
special help he was talking about.
The Emperor talked about a legend, one that was very old about a great dragon that lived deep in the desert
at the heart of China. It was the great dragon that first gave people fire and asked them to take care of his lands.
The Emperor said that with such great power, the dragon would be able to help build the wall very quickly. Xiao
Lung asked the Emperor how they could find the dragon. The Emperor said that Xiao Lung would travel into
the desert with the royal seal and ask the dragon. Xiao Lung was very anxious but agreed to go.
Xiao Lung spent weeks travelling through the desert with his friends. They were tired and out of water.
Finally, one night, as they slept, they heard a great roar. A hole opened up in the dessert near them and water
filled it. Amazed, the men all ran to the water and began to drink. When they were finished, the water began to
shake and a Dragon’s head slowly rose through the water and into the air. The great dragon had been found. The
men fell to their knees as the dragon roared again. Then the dragon spoke to the men. He asked what they
wanted. Xiao Lung showed the dragon the royal seal and asked it to help build a great wall so the people could
protect its lands. The dragon asked why it was needed. Xiao Lung said that the wall was needed to stop the
Mongolians from invading but it was too big a job for humans to finish. The dragon said that it would help to
build the wall. It would use its magic powers to raise stones, from deep in the earth, up through the desert sands
and build the greatest and longest wall to ever exist on the earth. However, the Chinese people must take care of
the wall and look after it.
After it was built, Xiao Lung was in charge of taking care of the wall. From that day on the Mongolians
could not invade China, no matter how hard they tried.
I thanked my great, great grandfather for telling me such an interesting story. My great, great, grandfather’s
story may not be true but it is an exciting
New Tale of the Great Wall.
