The Adventure of the Great Wall
Natasha Mather, Group 2: Fiction, Peak School
y name is Selena Evans. An ordinary girl of 9 years old, to most people. I don’t want to sound like
I’m gloating, but I am actually probably the least normal girl in my school. Make that city. Country.
Okay, I’m probably the least normal girl, in the ENTIRE WORLD (Well, me and 6 others). It
sounds crazy, but I’ll tell you how it happened.
Beij
I was 8 at the time, so it wasn’t very long ago. My family and I went on holiday to China,
ing actually. My best friend Kady was there with us. We did all the touristy things, like the
Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven, and I mean, those were okay, but what really got me was the Great
Wall of China, I mean, that thing is H-U-G-E!!! I seemed to get a rush of excitement when we were next to it.
Actually, it seemed to be, not so much a rush, but more of a tingle in my fingers. It was probably pins and
needles from keeping my hands still for too long, or maybe I was too excited. But then I heard a tiny voice that
seemed to be coming from the Wall itself!
M
“
Help me!” It was shouting.
'
This can't just be to do with excitement!' I thought.
I quickly ran over to Kady and told her that I needed to talk to her in private. She said to leave it to her, so I
did.
“
Mrs. Evans,” she said after a while, “I need to go to the bathroom, do you know where it is?”
“
Selena knows, she’ll take you darling.”
So we ran off to the bathroom and I told Kady all about the tingling and the voice. “Wow,” she said when
I’d finished. Then she paused for a while, looking like she was thinking.
"
Okay, how about this. When we go back out you try to hear the voice again. If you do, try to get your
pinkie through a crack in the wall, then feel around for anything in there.”
“
Okay, I’ll give it a shot. We’d better get back quick, my parents will be wondering if you’ve got diarrhoea
at this rate!”
So we went back out and I listened for the voice. I heard it almost instantly crying, “Help me!” I shoved my
pinkie into the crack that seemed nearest the voice. Something grabbed it and I pulled it out. Standing on my
hand was a little person with long brown hair.
“
Hide me! Quick,” she said.
I shoved her in my pocket and pretended nothing had happened. Kady looked across at me and I gave her a
meaningful look.
When we finally got back to the hotel I took the little person out of my pocket. Kady was in the
bathroom. “Hi, I’m Selena, who are you?” I asked her.
“
I’m Willow, I’m a pixie, but before I tell you anything else you need to know this: I can only be seen by
you and one other human being, otherwise I go back inside the great wall, stuck forever!”
“
KADY!!!” I shouted. “DON’T COME OUT TILL I SAY ITS OKAY!!!”
“
Uuuum okay?” Kady replied.
Willow asked if I wanted to chose Kady as the other person that she could be seen by, and
obviously I said yes. “Okay, what’s her full name?” said Willow.
“
Kady Evelina Wells.” I said. Suddenly Willow started chanting strange words that sounded like magic,
really weird! After a while Willow said that the spell was complete.
“
Kady, come out now!” I called. She came out of the bathroom, and silently I showed her Willow. She
gasped. I could practically hear the thoughts whirring around her head.
Kady was too stunned to speak. “Could I tell you why I’m here?” asked Willow. “You especially Selena,
because you’re the chosen one! Now, here is my story.”
“
I come from a land where magic is as common as the sun and the rain, but one Swonder day Fandi-”
“
Hang on, what day?” I asked.
“
Swonder, it’s our pixie group, it means seven wonders, you’ll see why later. Now, it was Swonder day and
Fandiscape, he doesn’t like us, he’s kind of like the enemy of all pixies, but that’s a different story. Well he
came and cast a spell to banish all the Swonders to their wonder of the world. Every one of the seven Swonders,
that’s me, Abigail, Amber, Carly, Jasmine, Melanie, and Kimberly, has their own wonder of the world. Mine is
the Great Wall so that’s where I’ve been for the past 10 years. He chose 7 ‘Chosen Ones’, one for every wonder,
who were destined to save us. And you, Selena, were one of them.”
“
What did you eat?” was my first instinctive question.
“
We don’t need food, but we do enjoy the occasional bit of it.” Willow replied.
