Meet Me on The Great Wall
Carolyn Rong,
ne day, a HUMONGOUS truck pulled onto Lily the Golden Lab’s driveway. Mike, the Golden
Retriever, who was Lily’s best friend, saw this. Mike’s family knew Lily’s family well. That’s how
the two had got to know each other. Curiously, he thought, “ What is that truck doing on Lily’s
driveway? It makes me a bit suspicious. Is it trespassing? Or is it Lily’s truck? Or maybe it has
business with Lily’s family.” When Mike came closer to the truck, Mike saw that Lily was being loaded into the
truck! When Lily saw Mike, she told Mike, “Mike, meet me on the magnificent Great Wall, one of the seven
wonders, a perfect place to meet. But to find me use only your own nose, not the nose of others.”

Mike was miserable that afternoon. He just couldn’t understand the fact that Lily had moved. There was no
one to play with. No one to bark with. What’s more, he didn’t understand what wall Lily had been talking about.
He wanted to find out what Lily meant, but he could only use his own nose, not someone else’s nose, which
ruled out the computer.
If only he could understand…
Mike kept Lily’s words in his heart. He almost listened to the words too well. Every time he saw a wall he
would spend hours looking for Lily, hoping that was the magnificent wall Lily had told him about. Every time
he would disappoint himself greatly, thinking of all the effort and hard work it had took him to later receive the
benefit of absolutely nothing.
One day, poor Mike couldn’t stand the pressure anymore. He felt like he was about to burst. So he
cautiously but quickly typed in “The Great Wall” in the Google search bar on his computer. He found out a lot
about what he needed to know. He booked a ticket on Air Dog China and after booking a room in the famous
and luxury hotel called “The Doggie Inn Beijing,” Mike took off from the airport. The plane ride was usually
very luxurious and fast, but since he was so impatient to get on the Great Wall to see Lily he thought he was
riding on a snail. All he could do was to wait for the plane to land…
When Mike landed he quickly headed towards the Great Wall in a taxi. He was so impatient he pushed the
gas pedals while the driver steered. When he got there he took a cable car up the steep, tall, mountain. When
Mike got there, just by taking a tiny little paw step onto the wall, he could already see how mighty and ancient
the wall was. Then suddenly, something caught him like it was the apple of his eye…
Mike couldn’t believe his eyes. There, on the wall, stood Lily! She was really, actually, there! Mike ran
over to her as fast as light could travel. What he didn’t know was that a surprise awaited him…
When Lily saw Mike, she gave him a glare so strong Mike thought it was as bright as the sun and strong
enough to kill a man. Lily then barked at Mike, ”Mike, did you use anything other than your nose to find me?”
Since Mike felt like he was about to burst, he knew that was a signal for him to tell Lily what she did not
want to hear. So he told Lily…
“
Lily, I did use the computer. I hope you don’t mind and can forgive me.”
But instead of having an angry or upset look on her face, she looked rather pleased.
She then told Mike in a happy voice, “ Mike, there is no reason under the sun for me to be mad at you. You
had the courage to do what other dogs dare not. You honestly admitted what you did wrong instead of putting a
mountain of disgrace on yourself by lying. You have proved you are a very worthy friend.”
Mike was very, very, happy to hear this. He was overjoyed. He was THRILLED! And he never ever, EVER,
lied again.
