Jenna’s Family Wish
Stephanie Lau
s seven year old Jenna Miller kicked off her blanket, the sun peaked out of the mountain. Jenna was
an early bird. She ran downstairs, poured herself a glass of milk, then ran back up to her room. Earlier
in the week, Jenna saw that a carnival was coming to town. Ever since then, Jenna continued to
blabber excitedly about going. Downstairs, she overheard her mom and dad fighting. “KURT!!! Why
in the world did you leave the milk out here?!” exclaimed her mom.

Why do you always assume it was me?! Maybe you did it!?”
WHAT?! ARE YOU INSANE?!”
NO?! BECAUSE I DIDN’T DO IT!!!”
It’s a good thing we’re not going to be together anymore!”
Two days ago, Jenna’s parents sat her down in the kitchen, they glanced at each other nervously, then Mrs.
Miller began to speak “ Now Jenna, you know how your father and I get into a lot of fights.”
Mr. Miller chimed in. “Well, we talked through it and the best way to end these fights is for us to….split
up.” He added carefully
Jenna stared at her mom and dad for a long time, then finally, she whispered “Who am I staying with?”
Her father spoke up “We’ve decided you should stay with your mom. She knows what’s best for you. You
won’t need to move out. I’m moving to Beijing, near the Great Wall.”
That startled Jenna for a moment. China!!!! She thought that’s on the other side of the world! But all she
said was “when are you moving out?”
I’m moving next week. Jenna even though we aren’t together anymore, you have to remember: we are still
a family, and we will always be, you got me?”
Yes.”
Good. I have some work I need to finish.”
He patted her head then left the room. Her mom smiled then left the kitchen Jenna just sat there, staring out
the window. She wondered what life without her dad feels like, how she would survive with her dad gone. After
thinking about it, she darted up to her room.
Leaving the memories behind. She was about to go stop the fight when she noticed something she never
realized before. There, beside her bedroom door was a little door, no bigger than her hand. She gently gave it a
little push. There, behind the door, was a book. Jenna reached out to grab it when the book opened itself. She let
out a little gasp, while she read the printing: whoever finds this book is lucky! You can get one wish as long as
you follow the direction which tells you how to find the magic tokens. Read this book to begin your quest. Jenna
just stared at the book, looking perplexed. Then finally, she turned the page. Aim to find the first token. The clue
is: The token is where a big event will be held. It will give you a strong feeling if you’re near. Jenna thought
about this clue. What big event, will be held here? Then it came to her: “the carnival” she thought “it’s today!
Maybe I would find the first token over there!!!” The carnival would start at noon. Jenna decided to arrive at the
carnival a little bit earlier when the booths are being set up so she could sneak around, looking for the token.
Jenna waited with excitement until it was time to go. She hopped on her bike and rode to the carnival. When
she arrived, Jenna glanced around the carnival, trying to figure out where to start finding the token, suddenly she
spotted a coin toss. I should start in the coin toss she thought that way. I can be near something that is similar to
a token. She sprinted over to the coin toss and started sneaking around the booth. She crawled to the back of the
booth. Suddenly, she feels a strong, pushy feeling inside of her. It was also a strange feeling, like something is
near. “Of course!” she said out loud, “the token must be nearby!”
Jenna searched everywhere in the booth, but the token was nowhere in sight. She figured it must be in the
next booth. She tip toed out of the booth, then zoomed to the next booth. Again, she had that feeling, only
stronger now. The closer she walked towards the back, the stronger the feeling grew. Then finally, she saw it
lying on the ground! The first token! She grabbed it and opened the book, then read the next clue: stupendous!
you found the first token! now you just have to find the last token. The clue is: Go to the mountain nearest to
your home. Climb it, along the trail, you’ll find it. Jenna’s house was near Peak Mountain, but there was a big
dark cave in there. But if Jenna wanted to grant her wish, she had to take this risk. Then she head off to Peak
Mountain.
When she arrived at the mountain, she took a deep breath. Then, she walked in with a flashlight in her hand.
