The Sorcerer of China
Precious Lee, Group 2: Fiction, International Christian School
t the Orphanage of Brooklyn, Jill snuggled under the rough sheets that covered her, trying to go to
sleep. She was just about to drift off when a gust of chilly wind blew on her face. She rushed out of
bed to close the open window, which was probably letting the wind in, but there was only the night
sky and a man riding a flying stick and holding a long pole topped with a sparkly, blue ball. “A man
with a flying stick?” Jill gasped. She pinched herself, thinking she was dreaming, but she didn’t wake
up. She was already awake. The man had brown skin, a beard, and dark hair. “Come,” he said in a
kind voice. Jill immediately felt drawn to his voice. Fearfully, she stepped onto his wooden stick, afraid that she
would fall and die. But to her amazement, she didn’t wobble at all.

With ease, the man sat down, and motioned for Jill to sit down too. He lifted his long pole and chanted,
“
Peruriritus.” The flying stick started to rise higher and higher, until it was about the same level as the clouds. It
started to pick up speed. The man introduced himself to her. “I am Marchel.”
Within seconds, the flying stick stopped abruptly. Jill looked around. They were in a small cave. Marchel
took hold of Jill’s hand and led her to the blue crystal ball that lit up the cave. The crystal was just the same
color as the man’s pole. “What’s your favorite color,” Marchel asked. “Purple,” Jill replied softly. After hearing
that, Marchel walked a small corner of the cave, made some shuffling noises, and came out holding two poles-
the one he had before, and another one that was topped with a purple ball. “Here,” Marchel said, “It’s yours.”
Jill took the pole Marchel gave her and examined it. “Thanks,” she said, a little more loudly than before.
Marchel sat down on the floor of the cave and Jill sat down too. He started speaking. “Jill, I believe that you are
a sorcerer. Each sorcerer lives in a cave located in some part of the world. This is my cave and it is in Peru. I am
going to help you find your own cave, somewhere that you like. A sorcerer’s job is to help grow plants and take
care of animals. Now that you have your wand, you can travel around the world to find where you want to have
your cave and help take care of nature. Here is the list of places that have not yet been occupied by other
sorcerers………..” Jill read the list, which only had 7 countries written. “Please be careful not to tell anyone else
that you are sorcerer or else we will all be in great danger.” Marchel warned. “Oh, and I’ll be waiting for you
tomorrow night by your window at around 9:00.” He led Jill to the door of the cave and taught her how to do the
travel spell. “Say the place you want to go to and add “riritus” at the end,” he instructed, “And you don’t really
need a soaring stick to travel unless you want one. I’ll accompany you this time.” Jill lifted her wand and
chanted, “Orphanage of Brooklynriritus.” Immediately she started soaring through the sky, which depicted
dawn. In no time, she was back at the orphanage, tucked in bed. Marchel placed Jill’s wand under her bed and
whispered, “See you tomorrow night.” With those words, he took off into the sky, now as bright as stars, back to
his cave.
The next morning, Ms. Netta, the kind lady who owned the orphanage, woke all the kids up at 7:45, which
still allowed Jill to have some time to store her energy for the day. Jill woke up like a shot, as usual, but this
time, instead of rushing to be the first kid to brush her teeth, she peeked under her bed. There it was, her wand,
topped with a sparkly purple ball. Jill spent the rest of the day finishing her chores and playing musical chairs
with the other orphans. That night, Jill went to bed early, hoping to catch some sleep before Marchel showed up.
Marchel was true to his word and arrived at exactly 9:00. Jill picked up her wand and raced to the window.
“
Let’s go to Ireland first,” she suggested. Marchel lifted his wand. “Irelandriritus,” they both chanted. They
arrived in Ireland about five minutes later and were greeted by the damp and cool climate. Jill liked the beautiful
scenery but it looked like the people did not need any help with nature and animals. Jill flew back to the
orphanage by herself this time and was able to sleep at least 7 hours.
The next few nights, Jill visited Belgium, Germany, Iceland, and Vietnam with Marchel, but Jill didn’t feel
that she was right for them.
On the last night, Jill went with Marchel to China. At first sight, Jill knew that China was just right for her.
China had a mixture of buildings and grassy lands, plus fields filled with pretty flowers. She could see busy
streets, crowded with people. “Marchel,” she said, “I think I’ll take China.” Marchel immediately told the
sorcerer council and they reserved China for Jill. Surprisingly, a huge, but cozy cave was already built inside the
Great Wall of China.
Now, Jill roams China, searching for animals and plants that need her help. So if you live in China, you
might see her, soaring through the sky like an eagle as she watches for ways she can help.
