This lesson:

This Reader uses the legend of Nian as a detailed introduction of a Chinese legend. The Reader develops the use of a narrative, which is used throughout the Red Readers to give children more of a challenge with their reading. Typically, Red Readers follow Chinese myths and legends as a means of educating children not only about Chinese language, but also about Chinese culture.

Learning objectives:

Differentiation:

Ask children if they know of any other Chinese legends and customs, and ask them to talk about them in Chinese. Ask them to also introduce annual legends and customs from their own culture. Lower level children can refer back to related Readers.
