This lesson:
• Introduces conceptual verbs
• Explains the relationship between plants and what they need to grow
• Introduces the adverb 還 , ‘in addition to’ • Introduces a new use for 多
There are three main aims of this Reader. The frst is to introduce more conceptual verbs such as ‘to grow’ and ‘to need’, which move away from the previous ‘doing’ verbs that have been covered so far. Second, 多 is introduced as an adverb quantifer or intensifer. Finally, the story stresses plants’ need for sustenance and nur ture for growth.

• To learn how to use the adverb 還
• To practise using 多 in a new context
• To understand the impor tance of caring for plants to ensure growth

Differentiation:
The use of 還 enables children to link multiple ideas and phrases. In this Reader, we see Dragon growing fowers on page 1. Pages 2 to 7 give fur ther information about what fowers need in order to grow. Page 8 introduces the second item that Dragon is growing, and page 9 a fur ther item. Through this development children can see how sentences ft together in an ongoing story. Ask children to use this construction to make up a story using a similar structure and a topic of their choice.
