About the Books
The way in which corporates communicate and integrate with their banks has become one of the most significant issues which today’s treasurers need to address, but with a plethora of disparate information available, where do companies go for comprehensive information and advice? Furthermore, with many sources of information focussing on Europe and North America in particular, what are the specific challenges for corporates based in, or operating in Asia and how can these be addressed as part of a global connectivity strategy?

Connectivity is not simply the domain of technology experts, it is the key to effective cash management: cash centralisation and visibility, automated reconciliation, cheaper and more secure payments and efficient control over collections all require an effective communication channel between a corporate and its banks.

There are two key factors that have influenced the connectivity debate in recent years. First, the SWIFT network has been accessible to corporates and its member banks since 2001. Since then, there have been various initiatives to make it easier and more economic for corporates to connect with their banking partners through SWIFT, particularly SCORE (Standardised CORporate Environment) in 2007. Second, a related trend has been a move towards connecting different financial systems in a more consistent way e.g. the way in which internal systems such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and treasury management systems (TMS) are integrated with a company’s banking systems. These two interlinked trends have the potential to revolutionise the way in which corporates communicate with their banks, improving the quality of information that can be exchanged, reducing costs and increasing security.

In such a dynamic environment in which corporates have so many more opportunities to enhance their cash management by focusing on the way in which they communicate with their banks, HSBC recognised the need to inform and advise treasurers, and provide practical guidance on turning technical and complex solutions into reality. To satisfy this need, the bank has put together this Guide on contemporary cash management issues for treasurers, which provides a systematic view of the importance of connectivity, the alternatives that are available and how they are used in practice.
