One day, when Derek is working under the big sun, he hears some weeping sound under a part of
collapsed Great Wall. It is a girl who is about 20 years old, she has been crying for 3 days and nights.
“
Why are you crying? It’s too dangerous to stay in the working site!”
Meng turns her head, not facing Derek, keeps crying.
“
Um… or I can help you!”
“
You will not understand.”
After Derek communicates with her, he quickly notices that she is Meng Jiangnu. Her husband has died
because of overworking in the construction site. Meng is too sad that she lost her newly married husband.
The legend of Meng Jiangnu was true, she really cried for 3 days and 3 nights until the wall collapses.
Now, a part of Great Wall had fallen down and the body of Meng’s husband, which hasn’t decayed, is
uncovered.
“
Why…why do you leave… leave me so early?” cried Meng, “The stars are so bright tonight…”
“
I have also pledged Nicole to watch stars with her…”Derek said to himself.
Watching the couple’s pitiable situation, Derek also wants to help, but he can’t. Instead, he misses Nicole
now; Derek regrets to leave Nicole for such a long time.
“
She must be very anxious and worried about me now…” Derek thinks to himself. “Maybe I should go
back, but how – “
He remembers the brick, he quickly runs to the end of the Great Wall to find that space which is for
fitting the brick. But it is in vain because the amazing brick has not appeared at that time.
Sun sets and rises; moon climbs up the hill and descends, times flies like running sand. After half a year,
the 9999999th brick is used and the Great Wall is under construction. The supervisor has come to check the wall
and he finds out the handful-size vacancy at the edge of the wall. When the haruspex and the supervisor are
arguing with each other, Derek discovers the piece of brick with a relief of a mighty dragon which is holding in
the haruspex’s hand.
When all the workers has gone home for reunion with their family members, Derek digs under the Great
Wall to find the buried brick back. This is his last and the only chance to go back to the 21th century.
“
Wow… I have found it…” cried Derek, in shaking tone.
Taking out the brick, inlay in the vacancy. After a ‘crack’ sound, the relief of the mighty dragon on the
brick bursts out a strong ray of red light. The ray of light propagates in all direction. “Tink!” Something hits
the ground when Derek stretches his arms, letting the light encircling him…
It is still the third day of Nicole and Derek’s trip. Although Derek has stayed in the ancient times for half
a year, he just left the original world for a few hours due to time difference in a time travelling trip.
Nicole is very nervous and worried about Derek. She walks along nearly the whole Great Wall to find her
boyfriend. But she is in vain. Nicole is now kneeling on the Great Wall, crying.
“
Don’t cry!” a hand was put on Nicole’s shoulder.
“
You…” Nicole turns her head slowly, murmuring
Derek is back, hugging Nicole.
“
Sorry, I should not run away. It’s my fault.”
“
No…no…I will not get angry with you…”
Derek hasn’t told anybody about his trip to the Qin Dynasty and the construction of the Great Wall. This
is because he doesn’t know whether it is a dream or not. However, what he has learnt is not the heritage but to
treasure the friends and relatives he has. The lovers leave the Great Wall hand in hand, but this time they can’t
discover a dull object inlays in the bricks – the key ring dropped by Derek when he comes back to the modern
Beijing a thousand years ago!
