The Unforgettable Love

lex was cycling rapidly down a hill feeling a rush of fresh air in his face, enjoying this exhilarating
sensation - when something inexplicable happened to bring it all to a crashing halt. But the offending
car in his path was never something he ever remembered. One minute there was the exhilarating rush
of fresh air on his face, the next - there was a nurse standing over him.
She was standing behind a large needle so close to his face. ‘What's happening now?’Alex
yelled. ’’What is happening now?’’ he repeated. ‘Calm down! Calm down please!’ the nurse said gently and
with great compassion.
Now, it’s time I introduce myself. Hello, Alex. You are in the Specialist Burns Hospital. I am the nurse
assigned to take care of you. My name is Sue.’
While they were talking, Sue made use of the opportunity to inject the needle into his arm.
After a while, Alex felt his legs go numb. He thought it must be a side-effect of the needle and he thought his
legs would get better soon. Unfortunately, Sue told him some bad news, that his legs must be amputated. He
was shocked by this. Then, his eyes were full of tears and he could not see anything clearly. He fell unconscious
after a while.
One hour later, Alex woke up and discovered that his legs had disappeared below the knee, just like magic.
Ooo...where are my legs?’ ‘Don’t worry, you are safe.’ Sue said that as though she was very happy and
surprised. Although Sue seemed very happy, Alex was not affected. It was because his mind was on his dream
career, which was to become an international and famous football player, and now it seemed to be slipping far
away from him at that moment. He thought he could not dream of being a football player any more. He was very
dissapointed and depressed. He thought his life was full of darkness and could not find any of life’s significance
anymore. Now, Alex just wanted to lose himself in this busy city.
The next thing is, Alex found himself in a wheelchair and started heading towards the rooftop. Do you
know what he wanted to do? He wanted to jump down from the rooftop. ‘Stop...Stop doing this stupid thing.’
said Sue. ‘I am confident that I can help you to depart from your depressing memories.’ ‘Really? But can I?’ ‘If
you believe me, you can!’ Sue continued.
The next day, Alex came out in his wheelchair with Sue. Then they went to the treatment centre. Actually,
Alex did not want to go there but Sue compelled him to go since she really really wanted Alex to feel he was not
alone and had hope in this world. Although Alex did not understand why Sue was so caring towards him, he was
still diligent in doing all the treatment. When Sue saw this, she was extremely glad and had hope for Alex. At
that time, Alex and Sue were developing good feelings for each other.
One month later, Alex could walk on the floor with his two artificial legs. Although some strangers
showed discrimination against Alex by looking disapprovingly at the sight of his artificial legs, he did not care
since he thought he had a lovely girl next to him who wouldn't give up on him. That lovely girl was Sue.
Alex, you see. This poster invites some brave people to go to the Great Wall of China, Let’s go!’ said Sue.
I...am brave enough?’ Alex said it carefully. ‘You are perfect in my eyes and you are just like a super hero in
my heart.’ Sue said. ‘Don’t worry, let’s sign up.’ Later, Alex had a phone call. They could go to the Great Wall
of China. The two of them were very pleased, and they packed their bags very early.
The Great Wall of China was built many years ago, but even now we can still see it. What a magnificent
and strong wall!’ Sue said to Alex. ‘I believe I can be stronger than it and I need to have an amazing victory!’
Alex shouted at the top of the wall. Then they walked along it chatting happily without a care in the world.
After this unforgettable trip, Alex's luck left him. He faced difficulties again. His upper legs that held the
prosthetics in place developed pain on one day. He went to the hospital for his legs to be checked out. ‘Your
thighs have inflammation and you need to stay in the hospital for half a month.’ said the specialist.
You may think Alex will be disappointed again? No, this time he had learnt to be hard and strong just like
the Great Wall of China, which helped him regain his confidence and determination. Alex recovered soon after,
faster than the doctors predicted, and he could return home after just ten days of treatment.
In fact, in these ten treatment days, Alex read some sport books and did some simple exercises everyday.
That was why he could recover in such a short time. At that time, Sue discovered that although Alex lost his two
legs, he still read the sports books. She knew that his passion was to be an international football player so she
decided to lend Alex a hand to sign up for the Paralympic Games.
Then, Alex practised how to use his two artificial limbs to kick the football. He also practised how to walk
again without the wheelchair - once the inflammation was taken care of. Finally, he was successful and he could
