Uto Village

hapter One A mysterious village
If you were courageous enough to stand on the Great Wall at Yuguan, and look down the prairie
stretching to the horizon, you might see a little but mysterious village called Uto Village. There lived
people with huts lined circularly with the communist hall in the middle and a park next to it. They
grew crops and kept livestock in their communistic farm. The elderly and the vivacious children, the
beautiful edelweiss and little daisies, the smell of fresh air and the grass…Everything in the village was just so
simple, except one thing, the villagers never grew old.
There was one rule in the village – villagers could never contact with the outside world. The Village Chief,
Yang, who had supernatural abilities, had set a margin for the villagers – the Great Wall. No one was allowed to
leave the village and reach the Great Wall to see the world.
The village was peaceful and harmonious, by standing aloof from worldly affairs.
Chapter Two The diary entries I
Dear Diary,
The village is so boring! How long do I have to stay like this? The troublesome girl, Xin, keeps on
reminding me not to dream to get out of the village. I’ve heard that for a million times. She is so annoying! But
sometimes, looking at her funny facial expressions is rather enjoyable – at least I don’t hate it. And sometimes
she is…I don’t know how to say…fairly attractive?’
Dear Diary,
Today, Zi and I had an argument again. He is just so immature that he is always thinking of reaching the
Great Wall to see the outside world. He never remembers what the elderly told us about the cruelty of people
outside the village and how dangerous the world is. I keep on encouraging him to give up this idea but he never
listens to me. It seems that getting out of the village is the only dream in his entire life. But I just can’t leave him
alone… He is so…worrying…
Chapter Three A date
On the next day, they sat together to have breakfast in the communist hall, of course, not talking to each
other. When Xin had almost finished her breakfast, Zi spoke, ‘Shall we have a walk?’
Huh?’ Xin glanced at Zi.
Maybe…in the park…’ Zi looked embarrassed.
Alright...’ Xin agreed but she was also perplexed.
Zi nodded to Xin blushingly and walked out of the dining room. He soon jumped and screamed ‘I did it!’.
Chapter Four Bad ideas emgered
Here they were at the park. ‘Alright, now can you tell me what we are here for?’ Zi suddenly looked
anxious with his hand scratching his hair frantically, turning round and round.
Mmm…can you…marry…?’
While he was saying that, he was searching for a ring made of a little daisy in the pocket with his hand.
Oh! Have you fed the livestock in the communist farm?’
Hey, are you listening? Don’t disrupt me,’ Zi seemed pretty angry since he was really nervous.
Be mature! The livestock will die if you don’t treat them well! The villagers will have nothing to eat!
You’re responsible for feeding them, aren’t you? I’m leaving to save them now.’ Zi was left in the park. He
kicked a brick ferociously with anger. Suddenly, he thought of something that he had not done.
Alright, she’s left. Now I can continue my journey to the Great Wall.’
He walked in a complicated forest for several hours and eventually arrived at the Great Wall. All of a
sudden a strong wind blew up a large amount of leaves and Yang, the Village Chief appeared.
Little boy, I know what you are doing here now. But think twice. You don’t know how good the village
is,’
I just want to see the world. The village is so dull. Nothing special happens every day. I want to go out
and see the world! The outside world must be better!’
You’ve learnt nothing in the village, boy. And that’s why I’m here, to give you punishment,’
To give me punishment, you are kidding, aren’t you?’
A brick. I’ll turn you into a brick of the Great Wall. See the world yourself. You’ll understand,’
Zi fainted.
