h no! It’s Nian again! Let’s hide before he sees us!’ whispered one of the villager. He trembled
in fears and tried to run away with his friend. ‘Stop right there! You think I’m blind? How dare
you run away without greeting me!’ the fifteen year old monster, Nian roared. ‘I’m
s…sor…sorry…m…master…I was….just-’ he was then dragged by Nian to his palace. ‘ You
will now be working here, in my palace for 3 years. No escaping. You have to clean my place.
Not even a single speck of dust should be found! If I find any, you know what will happen. This place might be
your last destination.’ Nian said to the villager rudely. ‘Brother, why do you have to be so cruel to the villagers?’
asked Dragon. ‘Ha! Of course! Because we have a lot of power. They can’t fight against us, so I can tell them
whatever I want them to do! It’s fun to see them getting scared. I’m making use of my power, Dragon. We are
the kings of China! You should also learn from me.’ Said Nian proudly. ‘Ok…. I’ll try.’ lied Dragon. He didn’t
understand why his brother was so different from him. Dragon also suffered when seeing the villagers suffer but
then he was afraid of his brother even though he had his own powers.
Dragon got bored staying at his place doing nothing. Therefore, he thought of a plan. ‘Since I have
powers, I can change into human form and explore outside! I want to go outside but everyone is afraid of me….’
thought Dragon.

Flashback*
Look! That’s Dragon, isn’t it? His brother is really scary…..I guess he is same as his brother. I really
wished they didn’t have that much power! They keep making us work for them, always threatening us.’ ‘I
heard that the fire in this village that happened 5 years ago was because of those two. A lot of people died….’
How can they be so cruel?’ ‘They were enjoying their life while we were suffering…’
Dragon went to the village. It was so much fun and the air was fresh. It had been a while since he had
come out. He also hadn’t got used to walking on his ‘human legs. Well ,he was a dragon. Dragon bought a lot of
food to eat. He felt so free, he felt like he was on top of the world. He wanted to live like that forever.
Unfortunately, he had limited powers: he could only live as a human for 1 month. On his way, he saw a boy of
his age, reading a book. He seemed so focused. Dragon was interested in what he was reading so he went
towards him. The boy noticed that Dragon was staring. He said, ‘ Do you want to read it too?’ ‘Can I?’ ‘Sure.’
Replied the boy. They spent the whole day reading the book. Soon they became good friends. The boy was
called Daoming. Dragon stayed at Daoming’s place until he changed back to dragon form.
As they lived together, they got to know more about each other. They knew what each other liked and
disliked, their feelings. They were no longer only friends, but brothers. Dragon knew that Daoming wanted to be
a government officer when he grew up. ‘My parents both passed away. I had nowhere to live, no money, no
food. So I couldn’t go to school.’ Said Daoming. Dragon had secretly learnt to write Chinese characters from the
villagers that came to work for them. So Dragon taught Daoming. Daoming was also good at martial arts. He
was good at kung fu. ‘My dad used to be a kung fu teacher.’ He always said. However he doesn’t talk much
about his parents. ‘Maybe he doesn’t want to remember about the unhappy past’ thought Dragon.
One day, Dragon suggested going up the mountain to explore. Daoming stopped when he heard Dragon
say ‘mountain’. ‘Daoming? Are you alright? Is there something wrong?’ Dragon asked. ‘No..nope…It’s just
that….nothing ….Sure..you want to go up the mountain?’ ‘Yes. It should be fun! We can camp there!’
Oh…o..ok’ Daoming forced a smile on his face. ‘What is wrong with him? Is he sick?’ thought Dragon.
Dragon wanted to spend a night up on the mountains with Daoming since it was his last day. After that
day, he would go back into ‘dragon’ form and can no longer see Daoming. He wanted to have good memories
with Daoming. At night, Dragon wanted to tell Daoming the truth. He wanted to tell him that he was actually the
Dragon, Nian’s brother. However he was too scared. ‘What if he hates me when I say I am Nian’s brother? I
will lost my one and only friend……’ thought Dragon. ‘ I …actually have something to say to you…’ said
Daoming. Dragon was surprised. ‘ I was shocked just before when you said you wanted to go up this mountain
because….my parents died here……’ said Daoming. ‘ They were fighting against Nian in order to protect
me…..But….But….Nian killed them…He was too powerful…That is why I want to….I want to… get revenge
when I get more powerful than him!’ said Daoming. Dragon was startled. He didn’t know what to say, his mind
was blank…. ‘You will stay with me right? You will help me fight against Nian, right?’ asked Daoming.
Umm…ye..yea….of cour…course!’ replied Dragon bitterly. ‘That’s great….just great….’ Thought Dragon.
Now how am I supposed to tell him? I think…I should just keep it as a secret…..’ thought Dragon.
