There was a strange secret inside Yi Mao’s eyes. She knew that she could see phantoms. She
tried to tell people about that, but no one believed her. People thought she was crazy. Yi Mao always wanted to
have a friend by her side, but no one was willing to be with her. She also tried to be friends with the phantoms,
but she failed. One night, she couldn’t sleep. She was always thinking about why such a thing could ruin her life.
Then, she went to the Great Wall of China to relax herself. After walking along way from her village, she
arrived at the suburbs of Beijing. She was amazed as she saw thousand of phantoms walking around The Great
Wall of China. The phantoms didn’t realize about her gifted power.

As she was walking uphill, she saw some phantoms down below The Great Wall. But those phantoms
were different than the others she saw before. They were all chained up together and wearing the same clothes.
A phantom bumped into her. She was scared, Yi Mao was wandering and she was worried if they knew she
could see them, she would face the poor treatments she had in her village. The phantom suddenly spoke to her,
Oh, I’m sorry! I don’t mean to bump into you! So sorry!” Yi Mao was surprised. The phantom stopped and
stared at Yi Mao with strange feeling. Yi Mao couldn’t stand it and said, “That’s fine, but please don’t tell
others about my real identity!” The phantom smiled and replied, “Cool, finally a human being can see me! I
have waited for so long for that to happen!” Yi Mao introduced herself first and asked about the other phantoms.
The phantom replied with a friendly face, “Oh, they were the one who built this Great Wall. About that, in
history they were forced to build it!” Yi Mao felt sorry after hearing that. The phantom whispered to her, “I’m
Wu Chong, we can be friends right?” Yi Mao was happy about that and accepted Wu Chong’s friendly request.
After meeting her first friend Wu Chong, Yi Mao was so happy that she often smiled. Yi Mao developed a
strange habit. After midnight, she would go to the Great Wall to see her friend Wu Chong. Her mother started to
act like the villagers. She thought that Yi Mao was a wicked witch too! When midnight came, Yi Mao rushed to
the Great Wall. Wu Chong was waiting her there. They always chatted about the history of this Great Wall.
While Wu Chong was gazing at the stars above, Yi Mao asked, “Wu Chong, how did you die? And how can you
be a phantom?” Immediately, Wu Chong’s face changed with anger. He replied, “Before I was a prince who
would become the king of China, but my little brother killed me because he wanted to become one too! But too
bad I’m the first son, normally the first son got to be the king, so my brother was jealous. Then I died because I
lost. And being a phantom is difficult, it is bad thing to be a phantom. Being a phantom means you still have a
revengeful heart with hatred. So, it’s better for you to keep your heart pure.” Yi Mao was sorry about the
question she asked and tried to make him happy again. Yi Mao’s heart suddenly beats so fast that her face
turned red. She was thinking, “Am I falling in love with a phantom prince?” Wu Chong laughed and pated Yi
Mao’s head and said, “It’s time now I have to go! Let’s meet again tomorrow! Bye!” He vanished and Yi Mao’s
face turned extremely red with sweetness on her cheeks.
While she was walking back home, she saw fire lighted up in her village! She thought the villagers were
in danger, but was tricked. It was a big trap! She saw everyone holding weapons and fire lamps on their hands.
She was trapped, she couldn’t escape. She yelled, “Mother, villagers! What happen? Why are you doing this to
me? And mother why are you joining them?” Yi Mao started crying. Her mother became cold-hearted and said
to her with cruel words, “I wish that I didn’t give birth to you! You strange girl always goes out at night. You’d
better disappear now and forever! You will never gain our trust, you witch!” The villagers laughed and
supported Yi Mao’s mother. Yi Mao screamed for help but no one answered. The villagers said, “What’s your
last word witch? We will start the ceremony very soon!” Yi Mao knew this day would come sooner or later. Her
only last wish was to see the last chance of Wu Chong! Suddenly a voice came by, “You dare to hurt the
princess, and you’ll be torn apart!” The villagers got scared. The cage was broke down and a strong wind blew
Yi Mao away to somewhere. A little boy from the village screamed, “Ah! Maybe it’s the phantom whom Yi
Mao mentioned before! She is a witch! If we don’t kill her now, the phantoms and she will kill us!” The others
were shocked and tried to search for Yi Mao, but they couldn’t! The mayor said, “Next time we see her we will
definitely kill her!”
Yi Mao was drifted away to the Great Wall. It was Wu Chong who had saved her! Yi Mao said, “Thanks a
lot! I thought I will never see you again!” Yi Mao’s tears were dropping again with sadness. Wu Chong hugged
