          "

Yan, wake up!" whispered Tai in the midnight. "Do you hear some sounds?"

          "

          What?" yawned Yan.

          "

It's a bower bird!" said Tai. "It's standing outside the window and there's a letter tied on its left

foot. Do you think it wants to show us something? Let's follow it."

They went out and followed the bower bird. It flew into the deep dark forest near their home. Tai and Yan

          ran after it.

At last, the bower bird stopped at the chimney of a small broken wooden house. Tai took the letter from its

          left foot. It said:

Help me! I am trapped in a cage. Please save me!

Tai and Yan looked at each other and ran into the house. They saw an old thin man with long grey hair stuck

          inside a cage.

          "

Children, please save me. Please help me." begged the old man.

          "

How can I help you?" asked Yan.

          "

This cage has a spell on it. If you want to save me, you have to mix the green and blue potions on the table

and drink it up. Then, you'll be able to unlock this cage," said the old man.

Tai did what the old man told and the old man was free.

          "

Thank you for saving me, you can take my bower bird. If you need any help, just tell and it'll help," said

the old man in a deep voice.

Tai and Yan went back home with the bower bird. When they arrived, the sun had risen.

The children were shocked when Tai opened the door. They found their dad and mom were lying on the

floor with blood on their clothes. There was a note holding on dad's hand. It said:

The war has begun. Find the King for help.

Tai and Yan were sad. They went to the Palace and found the King.

          "

King, the war has begun. Someone came to our home and killed our parents," cried Yan.

          "

I'm sorry to hear that. Yes, the war has begun. The Mongolians want more land from us. We have to fight

back and protect our country. But my problem is I don't have enough strong and brave soldiers," said the King.

Tai flashed an idea in his mind. "Maybe the bower bird can help," he talked softly.

          "

Bower bird, the war has begun. We need your help. My parents were killed because of it. Please bring them

back. We also need strong soldiers to fight back the land and protect our country. Please help.”

Suddenly, out came some yellow smoke. Thousands of strong soldiers were there. Also, Tai’s parents were

          back.

The war was over finally. The King won. The soldiers also built the Great Wall to protect China from being

attacked by the other countries. Tai and Yan lived happily with their parents ever after.
