The 2040 Destiny
Sum Yin Ho, Group 2: Fiction, Diocesan Preparatory School
he Great Wall of China is one of Earth’s greatest wonders. The Great Wall was built by the emperor in
the Ming Dynasty to protect themselves from attackers from Mongolia and other countries. It was also
said by astronauts that the Great Wall was the only man-made architecture that was seen in space.

hat do you think of the Great Wall’s future? What will it become? Will it become a ruin or an
ortant historical artifact? See for yourself.
the year 2040, Earth is a hi-tech world with all kinds of gadgets and holographs. People go to
outer space for their holiday, all citizens of Earth are at peace with each other, and there are no more invasions
or wars. The whole Earth is a single country! It seems that the Great Wall of China is of no use any more. Many
people want to break up the Great Wall for its building material to build new houses. What can we do to protect
the history of China and the Great Wall?
T
A group of people who lived through 2013 got together to conserve the Great Wall and its history. Their
leader, Peter, a citizen of Hong Kong and a primary school student in the 2013, now a history teacher, called a
meeting of all the people who wanted to preserve the Great Wall.
Peter wrote down the names of everyone and started to draft a letter to the POHA (President of Historical
Artifacts) about the reasons of conserving the Great Wall. The letter is as follow:
Dear President Samuel,
I am writing to tell you about our concerns about the conservation of the Great Wall. The reasons are as
below:
1.
The Great Wall is an important historical artifact and should be kept for future generations.
2.
It is a good source of historical teaching material.
3.
The Great Wall can be made into a museum and allow people to know its long and ancient history.
These are all good reasons of why the Great Wall should be kept. Earth Tourism will increase! Martians
and other non-earth creatures can have a place to go and visit! Please think about it carefully and reply after you
have done so.
Thank you very much.
Yours faithfully,
Peter Wong
On behalf of the Society of the Great Wall
After Peter wrote the letter, he mailed it to the president and didn’t think about the letter for a long time. He
didn’t expect that his letter to the president would work.
Many years went by and many things changed on Earth. Global financial problems loomed and many people
lost their jobs and tourism suffered very badly because off-worlders thought that there were no more interesting
things to see on Earth. It seemed to the people that nothing was going to help them. The Great Wall was left
untouched and out of bounds to all people.
Then one morning, the president of Historical Artifacts, by chance, discovered Peter’s letter. He read it again
and thought about it. Meanwhile, Peter was very upset because he had lost his job as a teacher.
The president took Peter’s advice and started to give the Great Wall a thought:
Maybe if I listen to Peter’s
advice, the problems will turn better and Peter and the society will be happy also!
So, the president of Historical Artefacts held a meeting with the presidents of various councils to discuss the
plan. He thought that the other presidents would agree with him, but his expectations were too high. No one
wanted to help him, but he was determined to give it a try. He wrote a letter to Peter about the Great Wall and
told him about his ideas.
After a one month time of discussing, Peter and the president reached a concensus. They decided to turn the
Great Wall into a museum and let visitors in. School tours could also go in to learn about the history of the Great
Wall. Peter and the president started their plan in secret. They needed to do it in secret because many people
disagreed with the idea of conserving the Great Wall.
After planning how to renovate the Great Wall, they decided to do the working at night time so that no one
would see them. Luckily, areas around the Great Wall were out of bounds and no one found out the construction.
Just as the people of Earth thought that they were doomed, Peter, the society, and Samuel were getting ready
for the opening of the Great Wall. They used the technology of MEGAMICROPHONE to inform the citizens
about the Great Wall.
At first, no one believed them. They thought that Peter and Samuel were lying. Samuel was even thrown into
prison because he had carried out illegal construction projects.
