er jet black hair was neatly combed in an exquisite bun and her powdered face was
flushed……” said Yang the dragon dreamily as he wandered around the cave, “When I flew
right above her, she smiled heartily at me and my heart immediately melted like hot, bubbling
chocolate……” At the sound of the young girl, Shing the dragon instantly bombed Yang
questions of hers. “Where does she live?” “What’s her name?” “I believe her name is
Jasmine Zhang and she lives in Beijing. And remember, her singing is just marvellous!” “Yang, I will be leaving
to Beijing in an hour. I am going to marry Princess Jasmine!”

As Shing swooped through the air, he could clearly see the majestic palace of the Emperor of China. The
soldiers at once picked up their spears and charged at Shing as the dragon landed in front of the Emperor and
tried to speak to the Emperor, “Your Majesty, I am Shing the dragon, I am here to request a marriage with your
daughter, Princess Jasmine. I will strive to protect her……” “I am absolutely not going to marry my precious
daughter to this ugly, wretched dragon!” exclaimed the Emperor, “Soldiers, get this monstrous creature out of
here and kill it right away!” “But Your Majesty, why not cast a spell and turn the dragon into a wall so it can
protect us? I have received messages that the Mongolians are ready to attack us again,” cried one soldier.
Fine, as long as he does not disturb my princess.”
Years and years passed by but Shing still remained a wall. In the spring time, he was surrounded by green
mountains and blooming flowers. The pleasant warm breeze kissed the dragon’s cheeks once in a while. In
summer, the blazing sun sent flaring fireballs at Shing’s scaled body. The sky was utterly clear and the sun
reflected on every scale of Shing. In the autumn time, the bushy trees surrounding Shing turned into a variety of
reddish colours. In winter, the piles of snow covered Shing like a comfortable blanket. Throughout the year the
weather changed, but Princess Jasmine’s singing never stopped.
One day, a deafening knocking sound woke Shing up from his beauty sleep, “Oh my god! Who is helping
me escape?” Surprisingly, it was a cunning Mongolian who tried to destroy the wall. “Yes! It’s my perfect
chance to escape! But…... if I leave my position here as a wall, wars will start and the two countries will be in
chaos!” It was a difficult decision for Shing but he still chose Princess Jasmine. Just as the Mongolian was ready
to succeed, Shing freed himself from the hard stones and the whole wall crumpled, then collapsed. Shing circled
in the air joyfully but as soon as he heard the rumbling noises of the running horses, he knew his decision was
terribly wrong.
Meanwhile, the God of Peace was looking down on China from the clouds. Seeing that battle between the
two countries was about to start, he was furious and was planning to punish them. But knowing that the love
between the Princess and the dragon was very strong, he just couldn’t bear to separate them. Just in the nick of
time, he came up with a splendid plan……
As Shing began his journey to the palace, a sudden gust of wind blew at him and made him dizzy. A deep
voice boomed out from above. “Shing, I am the God of Peace and I am here to make you understand the word
sacrifice
”.
As what you have done, you choose to leave your position as a wall, but do you know the
consequences of your decision? Do you know that wars will start and the two countries will be in chaos? Do you
know once the wars start, lots of soldiers and villagers will die? Even your precious Princess Jasmine will die!”
Shing immediately gasped and asked the god, “What can I do now?” “As you know, wars have already started
and the life of the Princess is in danger. The only solution without separating you two is you will have to
become a wall again. Although you cannot live with your beloved one but you can still be her guardian! You
shall be a hero, Shing! As the Great Wall of China, you can still protect her and China every day by sacrificing
your chance now. You don’t have to be with her all the time and your love will be there, deep in her heart.
China’s fate is on your hands now and the choice is yours,” said the God of Peace. “Thank you so much! I have
been acting so foolishly. I just thought about myself, I was so selfish! I am willing to give up my freedom,” said
Shing.
Fire!!!!” cried the Emperor of China. “Charge!!!!” exclaimed the Mongolians. Just when the two countries
were ready to charge, “Thump!” A line of firm stacked bricks separated the two rivals. That was when they
noticed it was in the shape of a dragon. “It was that same dragon who fell in love with our princess!” cried a
Chinese soldier who recognized Shing. “He had sacrificed his life! What a hero!” cried another soldier. Even the
evil Mongolians were touched and agreed to stop attacking China. So everything went back to normal. The
people’s lives were peaceful and blessed. Until today, the love between the princess and the dragon had never
died. To memorialize the almighty Shing, we Chinese, call ourselves “descendants of dragon”.
